Brownie’s Story
Brownie was rescued from a Houston dairy farm at just six hours old, with afterbirth and an umbilical cord still present—a true miracle. Brownie was on his way to be slaughtered along with hundreds of other dairy calves when he was saved by a compassionate person named Lizzie. He was the weakest of them all and was near death. The thought of being taken from his mother moments after birth is heartbreaking. The pain that animals like Brownie endure every second of every day in the dairy industry is unimaginable.
The family who rescued Brownie couldn’t afford to keep him due to the cost of cancer treatments for a life-threatening brain tumor. In the dairy industry, male calves like Brownie face a certain death because the industry has no use for male Jersey or Holstein calves. Dairy cows are artificially inseminated to keep the breeding cycle going, and the males are typically destroyed unless they are fortunate, like Brownie. This cruel process is relentless. The milk produced by the mother cows for their babies is sold for human consumption, while the mother cows are imprisoned to be milk machines until they too are slaughtered once they are no longer productive.
Brownie loves to be near people and will walk right up on the porch.
Scott and Brownie when he was just a baby. To see these two is to witness such love. The bond is palpable.
If Lizzie and Chuck could keep Brownie they would! They will be traveling out of the country to seek cancer treatments and surrendered Brownie to us. They are sad but relieved at the same time.
