Cooper’s Story
Cooper was a Spanish Breed Heritage turkey who came to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary at 3 months old. Like many young turkeys, Cooper spent his early life in a very small cage in a feed store, awaiting purchase to be fattened up for a human’s holiday dinner. As fate would have it, a kind woman named Lizzy stepped in while she was at the feed store buying feed for her duck. She saw Cooper being manhandled by one of the young workers—he was being held by his ankles, upside down, and shown to someone who was considering him as a Thanksgiving feast. Lizzy intervened, bought the turkey, and then figured out what to do next.
She pleaded for help on Facebook, and a dear friend of the sanctuary, Michael Cooper, came to the rescue. He transported Cooper to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in a box on the front seat of his car. Cooper got his name from a contest and was named after his rescuer, Michael Cooper.
