Danny and Doogie’s Story

Danny and Doogie were raised by their owners from just a few weeks old and became cherished members of their family. The love they had for these two beings was evident in every interaction. When the time came, their owners made the difficult decision to surrender Danny and Doogie to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, knowing it would give them hope and a beautiful life. Although it was tough for them to say goodbye, they felt reassured that Danny and Doogie were safe and in great hands at the sanctuary.

Since Danny and Doogie were 10 years old, they were considered special needs animals. This meant they required more medical care and attention, special diets, and time to learn, appreciate, and adapt to their new home.

Tragically, Danny passed away from a heat stroke on June 12, 2022, during an unbearable summer when record temperatures soared to 110 degrees. Doogie was lost without Danny, who had always been his shadow. When Doogie walked, Danny followed. Doogie was the more outgoing of the two, and Danny adored him. Seeing them together always brought joy to the sanctuary team, knowing they could give them the opportunity to thrive in their elder years.

Doogie was over 12 years old when he passed away in January 2023. After losing Danny the previous summer, Doogie didn’t want to be with anyone but the sanctuary staff. Losing animals that have become so beloved at the sanctuary is never easy. The founder Renee expressed that a new level of compassion opened up in her heart the day she embraced her vegan values, realizing she had an immense capacity for empathy.

Doogie loved hanging out in the office and on the front porch. Banana peels were his favorite snack, and he could devour a bag of greens like nobody’s business. He and Tommy, Renee’s husband, were also great friends. Doogie held a special place in Tommy’s tender vegan heart. Tommy, who takes on the painful responsibility of burying the sanctuary’s animals when they pass away, found it particularly hard to say goodbye to Doogie.
