Muley’s Story

Muley was part of the original herd when Tommy bought the Angleton property in 2002. She had distinctive big ears, resembling those of a mule, which earned her the name Muley. Over the years, she had many calves that ended up at the sale barn, but once Rowdy Girl became a sanctuary, those days ended.

From that point on, neither Muley nor her babies were ever separated again. One of her daughters, Ring Leader, is still at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary and was among those spared from the sale barn.

After the sanctuary was established, the team noticed that Muley’s feet were deforming. A visit to the vet revealed that she had a disease called laminitis, which would require her hooves to be trimmed regularly for the rest of her life. Eventually, a day would come when trimming would no longer be effective, and that day arrived with Muley being very crippled. However, her zest for life remained infectious.

Before the sanctuary moved to Waelder, Muley walked into the pond, as she often did to cool off, but this time she couldn’t get back out. She was stuck and tried for several hours to free herself. When it became clear that she was tiring and wouldn’t be able to get out on her own, Tommy sprang into action to figure out a way to rescue her.

Fast forward to Waelder. When the sanctuary found a beloved calf, Jeddo, dumped in the pasture with his umbilical cord still attached, he required hours of care each day and had to be bottle-fed three times a day. Muley became his surrogate mom and protector. If Tommy had sent Muley to the sale barn, the sanctuary would have never experienced the miracle of Muley and her love for Jeddo.
