Sheep Rescue Story

In late October of 2025, we received a call that stopped us in our tracks.

A Texas family had been forced to sell their land—and with it, their beloved sheep. With no safe alternatives, they were preparing to take them to a sale barn: a place where animals are auctioned by the pound, where fear fills the air, and where many never make it out alive.

Buddy, chillin' in the pasture at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.
At Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, we can’t always say yes. Space, resources, and long-term care must always be considered. But when we learned that some of these sheep were pregnant, our hearts sank. We knew what awaited them—and their unborn babies—if we didn’t step in.

So we said yes.

Because of that single decision, seven sheep were rescued and brought to safety. Since arriving, three mamas gave birth to a healthy lambs—born into love, not fear. Born without an auction tag. Born without a price.

These sheep will never know the sale barn. They will never be reduced to weight, usefulness, or output. Their lives here are filled with sunshine, soft hay, safety, and kindness.

Sheep are often treated as numbers. As inventory. As commodities.

We wanted something different for them.

In November, we launched our first-ever Sheep Naming Auction, inviting our community to help shape the future of these rescued lives. What may seem like a simple act—choosing a name—is actually something far more powerful.

Naming is the moment a life stops being anonymous.
The moment something becomes someone.

Each name chosen now:

  • Lives in their lifelong medical records
  • Is spoken during tours and daily care
  • Is known by volunteers, staff, visitors, and children
  • Becomes a permanent part of the Rowdy Girl story

Because once an animal is known by name, it becomes impossible to imagine them as a product.

Meet the Sheep You Helped Make Visible

Because of you, every rescued sheep now has a name—and a future rooted in dignity and belonging.

Samsa — A new mother with an all-black head

Alana — Samsa’s beautiful baby

Salise — Marked by a black head and white stripe

Azalea — A young sheep and Rosie’s oldest daughter

Oreo — With distinctive black-tipped ears

Maravati — Whose name means Mother Earth

Ptah — Our big boy, named for the Egyptian god of creation with an all-black head

Rosie — Once known only as “big sister,” now a devoted mama

Dr. Randy — Rosie’s baby, already deeply loved

These names are written into daily care notes. Spoken aloud during feedings. Remembered during medical checkups. Shared during sanctuary tours.

They are no longer invisible.

Once we recognize individuality, exploitation no longer makes sense.
Once an animal is seen as a person, their life becomes non-negotiable.

Naming is often the first crack in the story we were taught—that animals exist for us, rather than with us.

Because of you, these sheep will never again be reduced to commodities. They will live out their lives here with safety, care, and the simple dignity of being known.

Keep Standing With Them

If you didn’t get a chance to name a sheep, there is still a meaningful way to be part of their lives. By becoming a Sheep Guardian, you help ensure ongoing care, medical support, and lifelong sanctuary for these nine souls—and for the many others who will need us to say yes again.

Their story didn’t end at the sale barn.
Because of you, it truly began here.
