Gemma's Story

When Gemma was brought home as a tiny, fuzzy poult from Tractor Supply, no one could have imagined how deeply this little turkey would touch the life of the person caring for her.

Gemma grew up alongside another turkey, sharing companionship, warmth, and the familiar rhythms of everyday life. When her friend passed away, Gemma experienced a heartbreaking loss. Without her feathered companion beside her, she began turning toward her human caregiver for comfort—and an extraordinary bond of trust began to form.

Before long, Gemma became a loyal and loving shadow. The moment her person stepped outside, the soft patter of Gemma’s “dinosaur feet” followed closely behind. Curious, observant, and wonderfully nosey, Gemma supervised everything—from pulling weeds and repairing fences to simply relaxing on the porch. Whatever was happening, Gemma wanted to be right in the middle of it.

She also had plenty to say. Gemma became an enthusiastic conversationalist, answering familiar voices with chirps, trills, and expressive turkey chatter—and always making sure she got the final word.

Affectionate and playful, Gemma loved to dance and run around the yard. Once her burst of energy was over, she transformed into an enormous feathered lap dog. She would walk directly into her caregiver’s arms, tuck her head beneath an arm, lean in with her full weight, and remain there contentedly for as long as the cuddles continued.

Gemma even developed her own culinary standards. A true fruit-and-vegetable connoisseur, she adores mealworms, watermelon, cabbage, pineapple, and bananas—but serving them plain simply will not do. Gemma prefers her favorite treats carefully mixed with finely crumbled food to create her own custom “turkey salad.”

Since arriving at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, Gemma has settled into an area of her own that she now calls home. She is endlessly curious about visitors and loves following people around to see what they are doing. True to form, she remains the sanctuary’s resident vocalist and has much—much—to say whenever someone new arrives.

Gemma has definite opinions about her fellow residents, too. Chickens are not particularly her cup of tea, but she loves the ducks and is gradually becoming acquainted with Antonio, our other resident turkey. Watching her discover her new surroundings, build relationships, and allow her personality to shine has made all of us fall completely in love with her.

After losing her first companion, Gemma needed safety, understanding, and a place where her tender heart would always be protected. She has found that home at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.

Gemma’s story reminds us that turkeys are not commodities. They are sensitive, intelligent individuals who grieve, communicate, form profound relationships, seek affection, and possess personalities entirely their own.
