Flower & Maggie’s Story

In September 2025, Rowdy Girl Sanctuary became the forever home for two very special cows: Flower and Maggie. These inseparable companions were on the brink of being separated forever—and most likely sent to slaughter—when their longtime caretakers could no longer keep their farm. Everyone told them to take the cows to a sale barn. But instead, they made a call that changed everything: they reached out to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.

Flower’s Journey

Flower’s story began in 2010 when she was just two days old. Bottle-fed and raised like family, she thought she was one of the dogs—running alongside them and even attempting to leap fences as they did. She adored her human dad, following him everywhere on the property, helping him pick pecans, and even playing soccer with a horse ball. Flower’s playful, intelligent spirit shines through to this day. She is protective, curious, and has a spark that lights up the pasture.

Maggie Joins the Family

Not long after, a little black Angus calf named Maggie lived on a neighboring property. She would sneak away to visit Flower at every chance, drawn to her kindred spirit. When the neighbor eventually moved, Maggie was sold to Flower’s family. From that day forward, Flower and Maggie became inseparable.

Years later, Maggie broke her leg out in the pasture. Her caregivers tended to her for months, bringing food and water several times a day until she healed. Today she walks with a slight limp, but she carries herself with quiet grace. Unlike Flower, Maggie is shy and prefers distance from humans—but she depends deeply on Flower for comfort and safety. If the two are separated, Maggie bellows and paces, even trying to tear down fences until they’re reunited.

Flower and Maggie’s caretakers poured their hearts into raising them, but as time passed, they faced the painful reality of downsizing. With heavy hearts, they began finding new homes for their animals. Chickens, geese, feral kittens, and beloved cats all found safe places to go. But what about Flower and Maggie—two 1,100-pound “dogs” who had been part of the family for over a decade?

Their daughter in Seattle was distraught, worried about where the cows would go. Even their associate minister, who had fallen in love with Flower, asked about her constantly. Letting Flower and Maggie go to slaughter or an unknown fate was unthinkable. They had to find a place where the cows’ bond would be protected and their lives honored.

That’s when a neighbor connected them with Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.

Thanks to our community of supporters, Flower and Maggie made the journey from the Dallas area to Waelder, Texas. They arrived side by side—just as they had always lived—and stepped into a new life where they will never again face the threat of separation or slaughter.

Flower and Maggie’s story is a testament to love, loyalty, and the unbreakable bonds that animals share. It is also a reminder of why Rowdy Girl Sanctuary exists: to intervene when no one else will, to protect the most vulnerable, and to honor the lives of animals who deserve so much more than what the system offers them.

By virtually adopting Flower and Maggie, you help provide the food, shelter, medical care, and safety they will need for the rest of their lives. Most importantly, you become part of their rescue team—a circle of compassion that ensures their bond will never be broken again.
