Not everybody’s cut out for this. You know, a lo Not everybody’s cut out for this. You know, a lot of people want to have a sanctuary because they want to save animals, but if you can’t lead, you will fall flat and you will not only embarrass yourself but you will probably hurt animals in the process. I don’t mean that ugly, but not everybody is cut out for this work. It is a rewarding, but tough life.

When I made the decision to do this, I was already very much a business person. I’d had my own businesses in the past and I was not afraid to get on camera, to appeal, to ask for money. I was not afraid to do whatever it took to get a nonprofit status, to get whatever funding I needed. You cannot be shy when it comes to what you need when you’re taking care of animals that are otherwise eaten in our food system about six months after being born.

I am motivated and inspired by my mission, I am driven to be a change-maker because I really do believe that we have to change our food system. We have to change the way we view animals. We have to change the way we view tradition and view culture. But having a sanctuary is not for the faint of heart. It’s a lot of work and you better get ready. Those animals depend on you leading.

If you support our activism, voice, and work as a non-profit organization, PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER TODAY! Your support by becoming a member does that, so now is the time to join the herd!

P.S. - Thank God we got some rain a couple days ago but temps are expected to be back in the 100’s next week!
Star has been having a heck of a time with her lef Star has been having a heck of a time with her left eye. One day the caretaker came in and said that she thought Star had pinkeye. She was good one day and the next day it was inflamed. The vet confirmed that it wasn't pinkeye but that it looked to him like she had poked something into her eye and injured it. He prescribed an antibiotic and a patch and had us reevaluate in 7 days. Well, it wasn't any better, so we called the vet back out. He put her in the chute and determined that we needed to put a medicated ointment in her eye everyday for 7 days to see if it got any better. Then, he said the possibility of surgically removing her eye might be the only option. UGG!

After the 4th day of that procedure, Star wasn’t having any of it. The treatment was stressing her out worse than the eye problem. So, we called the vet again and he said to discontinue treatment and wait and see. Since her eye was not getting any worse, he said that she could potentially avoid surgery all together as long as her quality of life stayed good. She’s eating, drinking and chewing her cud with the rest of her rowdy friends so we are asking for well wishes and prayers for our girl, Star!

As with medical care for a human, it can sometimes be difficult to know the right choice to make to get the best healing outcome for the patient - it can also be VERY expensive. We are so grateful for all of your support- in the form of well wishes, donations, shares and likes, it all makes a big difference for us and our gentle giants!

PLEASE GO TO THE FUNDRAISER LINK in our Bio to help with Star’s vetcare. To date we have spent $360.99 and would appreciate your help.

Its members like Rebecca, who consistently give month after month and keep the home fires burning for our rowdy family! Thank you, Rebecca, for showing up as you have and consistently giving more as your budget permits!! Big hugs and we love you!

I am a proud member of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary because it is a symbol of the ability of people to change and to challenge the status quo. If Renee and Tommy can turn a cattle ranch into a vegan farm animal sanctuary, it gives me hope that change is possible for anyone. They are role models to others like them who see their story and realize there is an alternative to the way of life they may feel trapped in. Through the work Renee and Tommy do with their rancher advocacy program, I can imagine a future world that no longer includes animal agriculture. I know that Rowdy Girl Sanctuary has many costs associated with running it and that they have had to recover from weather conditions such as flooding and droughts. I am honored to help in whatever small way I can by being a loyal member for 5 years and counting!

Become one of our #proudmembers today and join the Rowdy Herd!! We need every dollar! Inflation is felt by us all, and this drought is burning through our savings and winter hay. Your membership is deeply appreciated and needed!

Love,
Renee
What crime have they committed? Why do they hav What crime have they committed?
Why do they have to suffer because we just don't care?
Why are they bred into existence just because we can't grasp the inefficiency of raising animals for food?
Why do we still believe the lies of Big Ag, though we see through the lies of Big Oil and Big Tobacco?
Why are we the only species who knowingly allows the destruction of our home for the selfish gains of a powerful few? 🤷‍♀️

TEXAS IS GOING VEGAN, BABY, SO PLEASE DON'T HAVE A COW!

I collaborated with Jane Velez Mitchell @unchained_tv to create this heartwarming song! We were honored to have @mercyforanimals come to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary and were so thrilled with the video they produced of the energy being generated for the Texas Vegan Tour in 2017.

You better believe this is our theme song because TEXAS IS GOING VEGAN. Play this tune and you will find that it is so catchy you’ll be singing it in the shower!

It is possible to spread a profound message in a happy, joyful manner. Look at us. Once you hear this melody, we promise you will be humming it all day!

As much as we know that our current food industry leads to murder and injustices and that what we talk about here on RGS is the hard truth, we also know that songs like this can spread light and love. That's why we created it, to focus on hope and the future of veganism and to bring all those Texas vegans out of the woodwork to sing with us. .

If you support our activism, voice, and work as a non-profit organization, PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER TODAY! We are bringing joy and happiness to the animals that now have the opportunity to live out their life here at RGS. Your support helps us, so join the herd!

Many people think I am Rowdy Girl, and I admit I a Many people think I am Rowdy Girl, and I admit I am pretty rowdy, but Rowdy Girl Sanctuary was named after my beloved calf Rowdy Girl. Rowdy Girl was purchased by me about 11 years ago when my husband wanted me to get more involved with cattle ranching. I wasn't a vegan at the time. Neither was he. We were cattle ranchers, and I had no inclination to help him at the ranch. I was into yoga, music, meditation, and doing my thing. Helping at the ranch wasn't really what I wanted to do.

He wanted me to help with fences, help with hay, and other ranch stuff. To get me interested, he came home one day and told me about these two calves that needed a mama, and one of them was Rowdy Girl. SO, IT'S ALL HIS FAULT! I always blame Tommy for telling me about these two calves that I fell in love with. One of them passed away early. She had a failure to thrive. Never got colostrum, never thrived. She died within a week.

Rowdy Girl, you know, was something else, VERY ROWDY! Always wanted attention, and I began to just fall in love with feeding her twice a day like clockwork. I would run outside and become a character in her life. I became her mom.

It felt like I was catapulted into a world I had no idea existed before Rowdy Girl. I didn't even acknowledge cows, really. I knew they were there, but I never really thought too much about it. They were Black Angus, they were there for a purpose, and I never gave it too much thought. Rowdy Girl changed all that. She was the impetus of my transformation, if you will. She was what started that ball rolling.

Cockfighting is a cruel blood sport where ro Cockfighting is a cruel blood sport where roosters like Joaquin are forced to fight each other in a ring to the death. This malicious activity is illegal and murders thousands of roosters and hens yearly.

Joaquin was rescued from the Houston area. He is one of hundreds who would have been killed due to cockfighting. Joaquin, just like others, was used to fight for people's amusement. He was terrified of humans, and we noticed his behavior once he arrived at the sanctuary. With much human care from us, he gained trust in humans again little by little. Joaquin is accepted here, and you can tell the change in him. We walk beside him and allow him to be free. You can find him visiting us on our porch each morning and hanging out with us all day without fear. He is part of our family now.

As for Kiwi, she was one out of fifteen who were rescued out of a cockfight ring near the Panhandle. Kiwi is what you call Game Hens. They use hens as bait to make roosters fight over them.

It's hard to believe as we speak, cockfights are occurring. It breaks my heart that we cannot save them all. What brings me hope is looking at Joaquin and Kiwi and all their trust towards humans now, along with seeing them thrive here with us. THAT'S HOPE for the future!

If you support our activism, voice, and work as a non-profit organization, PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER TODAY! We want to bring awareness to this cruel sport and another very dangerous issue affecting us, THE HEAT WAVE. Make sure to head to our stories to learn more about how the heat wave affects RGS. It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to Sha It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to Sharon Bates who is not only a PROUD MEMBER of Rowdy Girl, but also a sponsor of the RAP Summit! Our members are the lifeblood and force behind our work! Thank you Sharon for believing in our crucial mission to change the lives of animals and our food system with RAP.

SHARON’S WHY:

On Earth day 2020, I attended an event (hosted by ClimateHealers.org featuring Dr. Sailesh Rao) discussing the negative impact of animal agriculture on our climate. At the end of his informative presentation, I asked Dr. Rao if there was anyone he knew of, that has successfully transitioned out of animal agriculture - and he said, “Yes!” He mentioned the Barrett Family that transitioned out of chicken farming, and into mushroom farming.

And when I looked them up, I found a YouTube video where they mention the Ranchers Advocacy Program (R.A.P.) supported them with their transition. Immediately, I looked up RAP to send a donation; because I knew that ranchers want out, but don’t know how. They are caught in a vicious cycle of having to pay their debts, yet barely scraping by. Or, they have a hard time letting go of the herd that they so carefully, and selectively bred for decades, but can’t deal with the guilt anymore. So many reasons! And, finally there’s a support system for these people.

I’m very proud to be a part of this important and valuable effort. Thank you R.A.P. for what you do.

My Daddy, Herman King only had a 3rd grade educat My Daddy, Herman King only had a 3rd grade education. He was 1/2 Hispanic and 1/2 Spaniard and lived in an orphanage as a child. His parents died young. I never knew them. He spoke fluent Spanish but was ashamed of his heritage and never taught me. When he was in the service he changed his name from Reyes to King. My own heritage I never knew until I was in my twenties.

He was a violent man when drunk which was a lot! My Moma finally divorced him when I was 10 years years old because he was so brutal. He had 13 DWIs and lived in a little shack the latter years of his life on Nimitz road behind what used to be the Coconut Grove in Channelview TX. I got my start singing in his old dive back in the early 80’s.

He spent lots of time behind bars because of his drinking and alcoholism killed him. As a little girl I was terrified of him but as an adult I grew to forgive him. He taught me what I didn’t want to become and his life, though tragic because of alcoholism had glimpses of brilliance. He was smart, funny, innovative, could dance, and he loved me fiercely.

He came to all my shows when he could, when I used to sing for a living and he was my biggest fan. The bottom of the glass killed him but his life was the foundation of my own sobriety.

The following link is a song I wrote in his honor and he heard it before he died - give it a listen.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY daddy - I love you and cherish the good memories and hard lessons learned.
