The purpose of the Rowdy Girl Rally series is to inspire and build a plant-based community at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary by hosting area speakers that are passionate about animal rights and veganism as a way of life. We will begin at Bar X Ranch and enjoy the speaker, a potluck dinner, a vegan pep rally, and then hop NEXT DOOR for a mini tour of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary!
We plan to bring together plant based enthusiasts from the 13 counties surrounding RGS. They are: Harris, Brazoria, Galveston, Matagorda, Fort Bend, Colorado, Austin, Chambers, Liberty, Walker, Montgomery, Waller & Wharton. Come and represent your county! Get the word out – we seek to create a ground swell of interest so that our May 19, 2018 event will be a huge success! #texasisgoingvegan

Guest Speaker: Zak Shelton
Zak Shelton was born and raised on a working cattle and emu ranch in North Texas, outside of a small town called Corsicana. He grew up hunting, fishing, helping his dad’s friends taste test their BBQ at competitions and in the summers, bailing hay with on his grandfathers ranch in Chatfield, TX, which is still working to this day. The youngest of three boys, Zak often fought to prove his masculinity in an environment where the best way to do so was to kill animals. He remembers the attachment he made to certain animals on the farm, whether it be Big Guy, the massive Semintal bull that was the gentle yet demanding alpha of the herd; Cricket, one of the huge emus that used to jump fences; Pete the cat, named after Pete Sampras; Rip, the huge and huggable German Shepherd family dog that could quickly turn security system; Dolly, the random Llama that his family took in. Whomever it was, Zak became friends with all different types of animals, yet as tradition and convenience would have it, countless others ended up on his plate and in the sights of his shotgun. He is coming to the Rowdy Girl Rally in September to talk to us about being that guy about whom everyone would have said “He’ll Never Go Vegan” and what it took to go from cattle ranch raised, where camouflage was a primary color, to animal advocate and vegan business entrepreneur.
